US defence cooperation with Cyprus just took a significant step forward. Thanks to a new amendment to the US National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA), Cyprus is now eligible to participate in American military training programs alongside Eastern European countries. This move marks another milestone in the strengthening of security ties between Washington and Nicosia.
The amendment, officially known as Amendment 1233, opens the door for the Cypriot National Guard to join multilateral military exercises under US leadership until 2027. This represents an important shift, as Cyprus was previously excluded from these kinds of training initiatives. Now, the island nation can take part in drills alongside other Eastern European allies, enhancing its defence readiness and interoperability with American forces.
The NDAA amendment also extends the original law on military training programs, pushing the deadline from 2026 to 2027. This allows more time for Eastern European and, now, Cypriot forces to collaborate and gain experience through joint exercises with US military personnel.
The inclusion of Cyprus in these programs underscores the growing strategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean region. In recent years, Cyprus has emerged as a valuable security partner for the US, particularly due to its location and role in regional stability.
For the Cypriot National Guard, this opportunity to train alongside US and Eastern European forces is seen as a major boost for their capabilities. It not only provides valuable experience but also strengthens diplomatic and military ties with Western allies.
This development reflects a broader trend of increased US engagement with Cyprus in defence matters, reinforcing cooperation amid evolving security challenges in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.
