Cyprus and Jordan have strengthened their military partnership with a new Defence Cooperation Agreement, signed during Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas' visit to Amman on Wednesday. This agreement underscores a shared commitment to enhancing security and defence collaboration in the face of rising regional tensions.
During his meeting with Major General Yousef Ahmad Al Hunaity, the Chief of the Jordanian Armed Forces, Palmas discussed key international developments, the ongoing conflict in Israel, and the overall security landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean. Both officials highlighted the historically strong ties between Cyprus and Jordan and reaffirmed their excellent cooperation, especially within the trilateral alliance involving Greece.
Palmas also met with King Abdullah II of Jordan, where he emphasized Cyprus' dedication to deepening bilateral cooperation on defence and security matters. In addition, Palmas discussed Cyprus' role in aiding the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones and initiatives like the proposed sea corridor for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Addressing the Cyprus issue, Palmas briefed Jordanian officials on ongoing efforts to restart peace talks and condemned Turkey's violations in the buffer zone. Meanwhile, Major General Al Hunaity shared Jordan’s challenges stemming from the conflict in Israel and the complex situations unfolding in Lebanon and Syria.
The agreement between Cyprus and Jordan highlights the importance of collaboration in addressing mutual security threats, ensuring stability, and reinforcing strategic alliances amid ongoing regional challenges.
