Wednesday, February 25 forecast: The atmosphere is having a complete change of heart

Sun, then showers, then a serious windchill ''glow-up''.

Newsroom

If you woke up today thinking winter was a distant memory, think again. The weather is about to hit the "reset" button. We’re currently in that awkward transitional phase where a weak high-pressure system is trying to hold the fort, but a much grumpier low-pressure guest is already checking in for a long weekend.

The morning starts off polite enough, mostly clear with just a few clouds in the west. But as the day progresses, expect the sky to get a bit more crowded. Isolated showers are set to start in the west and slowly tour the rest of the island. If you're hanging out on the highest peaks of Troodos, that rain is likely to trade its liquid form for some snow or sleet. Winds are also planning a mid-afternoon glow-up, starting as a gentle 3 to 4 Beaufort breeze and cranking up to a very spirited 6 Beaufort on the southeastern coasts. Expect your patio umbrella to spread its flaps and make like a kite.

Temperature-wise, we’re hitting a peak of 20°C inland and on the east coasts, while the rest of the shoreline stays around 19°C. Up in the mountains, it’s a much crisper 7°C.

Tonight, the plot thickens. We’re looking at more local showers and even the stray "boom-clap" of a thunderstorm, though the sky should mostly settle down by dawn. The sea is also getting restless, turning rough to very rough in the north and west.

The big news, however, is the "Relatively Cold Northerly Current" arriving on Thursday. This isn't just a light chill; it’s a noticeable temperature nose-dive that will keep us shivering below the usual February averages until at least Friday. While the rest of us are dodging raindrops and hunting for our sweaters, the mountains are bracing for light snowfall through Saturday. We’ll be stuck in a cycle of "sun, cloud, repeat" for a few days, with a tiny temperature recovery teased for Saturday. But for now, keep the heater on standby and don't put the heavy blankets away just yet.
