Welfare Services had been actively involved with a family in Larnaca over the past few years, conducting regular visits aimed at improving their living conditions. However, according to an official statement released on Friday regarding a case involving allegations of child abuse, there had been no prior reports of sexual abuse or labor exploitation.

Officials emphasize the seriousness of the case, noting that the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare has called for a comprehensive report on the matter. The Welfare Services reaffirm their commitment to addressing reports of domestic violence, stating that when the first indication of potential abuse emerged, their officers promptly took action by filing a complaint with the police. This led to the initiation of legal proceedings and subsequent protective measures.

“As part of their duties, Welfare Services had been monitoring the family’s situation following an anonymous tip about their living conditions. Their visits—both planned and unannounced—were intended to assess and support the household,” the statement explains.

However, it further clarifies that in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders, including family members, “no previous reports were filed regarding the allegations of sexual abuse and labor exploitation now being brought against the parents.”

Following the report of this serious matter to law enforcement, Welfare Services took custody of the children. The case is currently under review by the Criminal Court.
