The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is pressing ahead with its smart meter rollout, bringing even more households the ability to track and manage their electricity use. These high-tech meters don’t just measure energy consumption—they provide real-time data that allows consumers to make informed choices about their electricity use, helping them cut down on unnecessary costs.
One of the biggest advantages of the new meters is their ability to show which appliances consume the most—and the least—energy. This means consumers can make smarter decisions when purchasing new appliances or adjusting their daily habits. Whether it’s choosing a more energy-efficient refrigerator or deciding how long to keep the lights on, the smart meters put that power in the hands of the consumer.
"Households will be able to see exactly which appliances are using the most energy and make adjustments to save money."
"These meters will completely change how people think about their electricity use," said an EAC representative. "Households will be able to see exactly which appliances are using the most energy and make adjustments to save money."
More Benefits for Consumers
Beyond helping families reduce their energy bills, the smart meters also improve service efficiency. Bills will now be more accurate, and consumers who opt for digital invoices will receive them the same day. The EAC is also allowing those who go paperless to donate their savings to one of six local charities.
The meters will also help detect faults faster, meaning quicker repairs, fewer disruptions, and reduced electricity theft. And with remote monitoring capabilities, EAC crews will no longer need to visit homes as frequently, saving time and resources.
Where Installations Are Happening Next
The EAC is prioritizing urban areas in this phase of the rollout, with 150,000 smart meters expected to be installed by the end of 2025 and 500,000 by 2028.
Locations for April Installations:
- Nicosia: Strovolos (Stavrou Ave. to Spyros Kyprianou Ave.), French Ambassador Area, Aglantzia (Larnaca Ave. from Panepistimiou Roundabout to Satirical Theater)
- Limassol: Mesa Geitonia, Agios Athanasios, areas along Limassol-Nicosia Road and Archbishop Makarios III Avenue
- Larnaca: Kamares, Agios Georgios Makris, areas near K-Cineplex Roundabout
- Paralimni: April 1st Avenue (Kokkinos Supermarket Area), Protaras-Pernera Area, North of Metro Supermarket
- Paphos: Paphiakos Stadium, areas between Dimokratias Avenue and Mesogi
A Smarter, Greener Future
The project is backed by €35 million from the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund, with strict deadlines to complete the installations and secure the funding. The EAC is working at full speed to meet these targets and bring Cyprus into a more energy-efficient future.
With smart meters now giving households greater control over their electricity consumption, Cypriots can look forward to lower energy bills, a more reliable power grid, and a greener, more sustainable lifestyle.
