Cypriots plan last-minute New Year’s Eve outings, PASIKA seeks holiday hours extension

Cypriots remain cautious about holiday outings – Average prices around €50 for New Year’s Eve.

By Marina Hadjichristodoulou

The festive season has officially begun, even if the weather has yet to match the mood. Music venues and restaurants across Cyprus are already preparing to welcome holiday crowds.

Speaking to 24news, the Secretary-General of the Cyprus Hospitality and Entertainment Association (PASIKA), Fanos Leventis, said several restaurants have already released their holiday menus and pricing. “These are special menus for Christmas and New Year’s. They offer a complete experience, pairing specific dishes with selected wines. Prices can reach up to €100 per person, and it’s up to each individual to decide whether such a menu suits them.”

He added that these restaurants typically provide a set menu including an appetizer, main course, dessert and coffee, hence the higher cost. “As for music and dance venues, we don’t yet have full pricing details,” he said.

Letter to the Interior Minister requesting extended hours

Leventis also highlighted the letter sent today to Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou. “We are asking for extended operating hours throughout the holiday period, from 20 December to 7 January. Specifically, we requested at least an extra hour for all establishments, from music venues to cafés and restaurants. We also asked that operating hours be unrestricted on New Year’s Eve to avoid mass departures at the same time.

“If all venues close simultaneously, we will see traffic congestion and associated risks. A more flexible closing time would allow for safer and smoother departures.”

Cypriots book late

“For now, there are some reservations, but not enough yet,” Leventis noted. He advised the public to check every detail before booking, what the price includes, and what to expect, to avoid misunderstandings. “If any issue arises, people should resolve it on the spot.”

“Cypriots tend to book at the last minute, though there are always those who plan ahead. Business owners rely heavily on the holidays. It’s a vital financial boost that helps them cover significant gaps,” he said.

Limited bookings in the Famagusta District

Leventis added that demand varies by district. “Coastal areas, particularly the free Famagusta region, show limited interest. Demand there depends largely on the number of open accommodations offering both lodging and holiday outings. Larnaca has its own steady population and should perform well. Limassol and Paphos are also expected to do well.”

He noted that mountain resorts attract their own audience, while Nicosia traditionally remains a key factor in balancing holiday activity for residents staying in the city.

Optimism for holiday outings

“In the end, I believe people will go out at least once, if only for a coffee with loved ones, and that matters. Businesses that maintain their regular menus do not usually raise prices; price increases apply only when special holiday menus are introduced.

“Taverns with live music often offer packages that include drinks, typically around €60 per person, covering food, dessert and beverages. The average price is roughly €50, which I consider reasonable for New Year’s Eve. For Christmas, prices range between €40 and €50.”

Leventis added that PASIKA is now awaiting a positive response from the Interior Ministry on the requested extensions. “It’s important that the decision is issued in time for the holiday period,” he said.
