Think Nicosia is boring? Meet your new green obsession!

''Gardens of the Future'' invites families and students to hands-on hydroponics and aquaponics workshop this Saturday, it's free.

Newsroom

If you think Nicosia is just traffic, gray rooftops, and overpriced lattes, you clearly haven’t met the “Gardens of the Future.” This Saturday, the city gets a green makeover, and you’re invited to get your hands dirty.

At this hands-on workshop, vertical gardens, hydroponics, and aquaponics take center stage. That’s right: leafy greens growing without soil, fish doing double duty as natural fertilizer, and water cycling through a mini ecosystem that’s basically science class with style.

These vertical setups cram maximum plants into minimal space, perfect for balconies, schoolyards, or even the office terrace you’ve been ignoring. Attendees will plant, transplant, check water quality, clean filters, and track plant growth, all while learning how city farming can save water, cut waste, and make neighborhoods cooler and more livable.

But it’s not just about plants. It’s about community: families, students, and neighbors collaborating, experimenting, and watching their food literally grow before their eyes. Who knew saving the planet could feel this fun?

The initiative is part of the European CARDIMED project, funded by Horizon Europe, helping Mediterranean cities adapt to climate change. The vertical garden is more than a pretty face; it’s a living lab for eco-friendly urban solutions.
