A 26-year-old man from Paphos, Alexandros Antoniou, died early Saturday morning after battling severe injuries sustained during a knife attack in the village of Konia earlier in the week. He had been in critical condition at a private medical center in Limassol since Wednesday.
Police confirmed that Antoniou succumbed to his wounds at around 2:44 a.m. Following his death, investigators upgraded the case to premeditated murder. A 58-year-old man, initially arrested shortly after the incident, was re-arrested under a new judicial warrant issued at dawn. He had already been in custody.
Later on Saturday, the Paphos District Court ordered the suspect to remain in detention for eight days as police continue to piece together the circumstances of the attack.
Sequence of events
The assault unfolded at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday in a residential area of Konia. According to the evidence collected so far, the 58-year-old allegedly attacked Antoniou with a knife, inflicting life-threatening injuries. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital before being transferred to the Limassol clinic where he was treated until his death.
Crime scene investigators and officers from the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department have been conducting inquiries since the attack, including gathering witness statements and securing forensic evidence.
Autopsy findings
A post-mortem examination was carried out on Saturday afternoon at Nicosia General Hospital by government forensic pathologist Dr. Nikola Charalambous, with private pathologist Dr. Marios Matsakis present on behalf of the victim’s family. The autopsy concluded that Antoniou died from a fatal wound to the right carotid artery caused by a sharp cutting and stabbing instrument.
