A 26-year-old man sustained facial fractures and other injuries in clashes that erupted Monday night following the football match between APOEL and Anorthosis at GSP Stadium, police said. The man is being treated at Nicosia General Hospital.
According to police, confrontations broke out as fans exited the stadium, leading to altercations and fires set near the area. Authorities briefly closed the motorway as tensions spilled over to the adjacent "Nuevo Campo" futsal fields. Riot police responded with tear gas and deployed the "Ajax" anti-riot vehicle to restore order, while fire services tackled the flames.
Earlier, before the match began, a group of Anorthosis fans reportedly attempted to breach the eastern stand, designated for APOEL supporters. The attempt was thwarted by security, preventing further escalation.
The Nicosia Crime Investigation Department is handling the case.
