The Animal Party of Cyprus and the Ecologists 'Movement - Citizens' Cooperation are calling on government officials to find an immediate solution for 150 dogs that will be left on the street due to the closure of a shelter Nicosia in which they are being housed.
An announcement from the Ecologists 'Movement - Citizens' Cooperation read, "Unfortunately, once again it seems that the rights of animals, especially dogs, are secondary, as according to reports, 150 dogs will be left on the street due to closure of a shelter in Nicosia".
it seems that the promises are not kept and only pre-election promises remain
According to Second Vice President of the Movement, Adonis Yagou, meetings were held in March 2020 with the Minister of Agriculture and it was agreed that there was a need for the creation of local regional shelters in order to house the growing number of stray animals in Cyprus. But he said, "it seems that the promises are not kept and only pre-election promises remain".
The Animal Party of Cyprus also made a statement which read, "for quite some time now, efforts have been made by our Party to help find land for the purpose of operating a dog shelter, however, the situation remains the same, with the risk of many dogs being found abandoned again without care, shelter and love."
Both parties are calling on the Anastasiadis government and the Minister of Agriculture to intervene and ensure that the dogs from this shelter are not left on the street or euthanized.
The government has yet to make an official response.
