An elderly woman who had gone swimming in Limassol died on Monday, with reports saying she was spotted unconscious in the water at a popular beach.

According to local media, an 87-year-old Greek Cypriot woman was spotted unconscious in the water at least 50 metres from shore, at a popular beach in Limassol.

The woman was spotted floating in the water on Monday morning, with lifeguards saying they noticed her at 7:40am, at a distance west of the lifeguard tower.

Lifeguards also issued a warning on social media, advising against senior citizens swimming away from shore

According to a Facebook post, lifeguards rushed to her aid using a Jet Ski and brought her back to the shore, where they attempted to resuscitate her but to no avail.

An ambulance rushed the elderly woman to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.

Lifeguards said it took the ambulance 15 minutes to arrive at the scene, while reports said the woman was known to have a heart condition.

Last week another elderly woman was spotted unconscious at the same location, but it was not immediately known how long she had been in the water.

Lifeguards also issued a warning on social media, advising against senior citizens swimming away from shore.
