Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelidis has raised red flags about the state of the country’s justice system, voicing strong concerns to the president over how the Legal Service operates, corruption within the police force, and the growing influence of organized crime.
According to reports, Angelidis told President Nikos Christodoulides during a recent meeting that he can no longer continue in his post under the current conditions. The newspaper Politis went as far as reporting that he submitted his resignation.
But sources close to the matter told Kathimerini that no formal resignation letter has been filed, at least not yet. Still, they say Angelidis is prepared to walk away if nothing changes.
The president, for his part, has reportedly urged him to stay, attempting to defuse the situation and keep the state’s second-highest legal officer in place.
The standoff now puts fresh pressure on the government at a time when public trust has already been shaken by high-profile crime cases and repeated criticism over how authorities handle corruption. Whether Angelidis ultimately steps down may depend on whether the reforms he’s pushing for gain traction and how far the government is willing to go to clean up the system.
