Attorney General asks for restraint as review of Koumas case nears end

Authorities warn against speculation as investigation into federation president continues

Newsroom

The Attorney General on Tuesday urged the public to avoid speculation as authorities continue reviewing a criminal investigation involving Cyprus Football Federation President Giorgos Koumas, saying the process is still ongoing and nearing a conclusion.

The Legal Service is currently examining the findings of a criminal investigator who was appointed to assist police in looking into whether Koumas’ role at the football federation was compatible with the law. The case has attracted strong public attention and renewed debate over transparency and accountability in Cypriot football.

In a statement, the Attorney General said it is standard practice for the Legal Service not to comment publicly on cases that are still being reviewed or investigated. He stressed that speaking out before a final decision is made could interfere with the proper handling of the case.

Because of the seriousness and complexity of the matter, the review has taken time, though a final decision is expected soon. That decision could result in criminal charges being filed or, if prosecutors decide not to proceed, a public explanation outlining why.

Until then, the Attorney General called for restraint, saying public discussion of the details of criminal investigations should be avoided.

The case has once again put Cyprus football under the spotlight, with many watching closely to see how authorities handle one of the most high-profile governance cases in the sport’s recent history.

Recap: The investigation focuses on whether Giorgos Koumas held positions or interests that were not allowed under the law while leading the Cyprus Football Federation. Police completed their investigation with the help of a criminal investigator appointed by the attorney general, and the legal service has been reviewing the findings. A final decision is expected in the coming period.
