The government portal for bike subsidy applications was temporarily shut down due to "excessive interest" in the scheme.

The website www.podilato.gov.cy went live this morning, but due to the number of people on the platform at the same time, the site shut down and many people weren't able to get access.  The platform will be re-opened at a later date.  Prior notice will be given by the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Works.

The bike subsidy scheme was introduced by Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos in order to alleviate the traffice problem around urban areas.

Although bicycle commuting conditions around town are not ideal, efforts are being made to increase the number of bike paths, especially in busy areas, making it safer for bicyclists to take to the streets.

The bicycle subsidy scheme will have a total budget of 570,000 euros for the period of 2021-2023.  People who are interested, and qualify, can receive 200 euros for bikes amounting up to 1,000 euros including VAT.  Disabled persons will be given up to 800 euros, depending on the cost of the bike.
