Biden unveils plan for US-built Gaza port to boost aid delivery from Cyprus

Temporary pier to facilitate hundreds of additional truckloads daily, addressing urgent needs in the aftermath of Israeli military campaign.

President Joe Biden is set to announce during his State of the Union address that the US military will construct a temporary port in Gaza to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. The port aims to increase the daily influx of aid to Palestinians by "hundreds of additional truckloads." Notably, this initiative will not involve US troops on the ground in Gaza.

The port's construction is expected to take several weeks, with large ships initially delivering supplies via Cyprus, subject to Israeli security inspections.

The move comes in response to the UN's warning that a quarter of Gaza's population is on the brink of famine. The situation in Gaza has worsened since Israel's military campaign in October, leading to a desperate need for urgent aid. The specific details about who will build the causeway or secure aid on land remain unclear.

The announcement follows growing impatience with Israel over the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently highlighted the starvation of children in northern Gaza, prompting urgent efforts to address the escalating crisis.
