Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides extended a warm welcome to Montenegro's President Jakov Milatović on Monday during his official visit to Cyprus, expressing Cyprus' readiness to provide technical support to Montenegro as it aligns further with European standards.
During their meeting, President Christodoulides highlighted the historic nature of Milatović's visit, emphasizing the strong and enduring relationship between Cyprus and Montenegro. He noted the shared values and commitments to international law, peace, and prosperity that unite the two countries.
The discussions focused on bolstering bilateral cooperation, particularly in tourism, trade, investments, education, shipping, culture, and technology. Both leaders agreed on a roadmap for finalizing and signing pending agreements in these areas.
President Christodoulides pledged Cyprus' support to Montenegro's aspirations for European Union membership, offering technical assistance and sharing best practices from Cyprus' own EU accession process.
Referring to security challenges in Europe, President Christodoulides stressed the importance of stability in the Western Balkans and reiterated Cyprus' commitment to supporting the region's European integration. He affirmed that Cyprus would prioritize this issue during its EU Council Presidency in 2026, aiming to accelerate Montenegro's EU accession process.
Regarding the Cyprus problem, President Christodoulides reaffirmed his commitment to reunifying Cyprus and ending the 50-year occupation of its territory by Turkish forces. He thanked Montenegro for its principled stance on the Cyprus issue.
In response, President Milatović praised the strong bilateral relations between Cyprus and Montenegro and expressed his country's interest in further developing economic ties. He announced upcoming visits by Montenegrin ministers to Cyprus to sign memoranda of understanding and strengthen political ties.
President Milatović commended Cyprus' EU accession achievements and expressed gratitude for Cyprus' support of Montenegro's EU aspirations. He also highlighted Cyprus' humanitarian efforts in the Middle East and expressed Montenegro's willingness to contribute to these efforts.
The visit concluded with President Milatović inviting President Christodoulides to Montenegro and affirming Montenegro's commitment to international peacekeeping efforts, including its participation in the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.
