Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has arrived in Belgrade, meeting Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to talk about building a stronger relationship between the two countries. Their meeting on Friday covered a lot of important topics, from trade and tourism to Serbia's European Union (EU) membership and Cyprus' upcoming presidency of the EU.
The two leaders started by highlighting the strong friendship between Cyprus and Serbia. Vučić was quick to express how grateful Serbia is for Cyprus’ support in helping the country on its journey to join the EU. He also mentioned how close the two countries are, calling Cypriots “brothers” and saying the Serbian people are thankful for Cyprus' support.
One of the key topics discussed was Cyprus’ commitment to helping Serbia with its EU ambitions. Christodoulides assured Vučić that Cyprus is ready to help Serbia make real progress on its EU membership during Cyprus’ presidency of the EU Council in 2026.
Christodoulides also made it clear that Cyprus fully supports Serbia’s sovereignty over Kosovo, echoing Cyprus' long-standing position on territorial integrity.
But the discussions weren’t just about politics. The two presidents also looked at ways to boost their countries’ trade and tourism. Christodoulides pointed out that tourism from Serbia to Cyprus has grown significantly, with a 200% increase in visitors. This has been helped by direct flights between the two countries. The two leaders agreed there’s still much more potential to grow in these areas.
Another exciting development from the talks: Cyprus will be taking part in the 2027 World Expo, which will be hosted in Belgrade. Christodoulides confirmed that he’ll be attending and sees the event as a big opportunity for both countries to work even closer together.
After their private discussions, the two presidents met with their teams to go over more details and plan for the future. With both leaders eager to strengthen their ties, this meeting signals a bright future for Cyprus and Serbia, with even more cooperation on the horizon.
