Cyprus carried out more than 12,000 cataract operations in 2023, placing it among the more active countries in the European Union for this common eye procedure, according to figures released by Eurostat.

The data shows that 12,194 surgeries were performed locally last year. When adjusted for population, that works out to 1,273 procedures per 100,000 people. This puts Cyprus comfortably above the EU average of 1,118 and ranks it 10th across the bloc.

Only a small fraction of patients needed to stay overnight in hospital. Just 36 cases involved in-patient care, which reflects how routine and minimally invasive cataract surgery has become in modern healthcare systems.

Across the EU as a whole, the scale of treatment is significant. Cataract removal, which replaces the eye’s clouded lens to restore vision, was carried out more than 5 million times in 2023.

Some countries recorded particularly high rates. Luxembourg topped the list with 1,627 procedures per 100,000 residents. France and Estonia followed with similarly elevated figures.

At the lower end, Romania reported fewer than 400 procedures per 100,000 people. Poland and Bulgaria also posted relatively modest rates.
