Cyprus had the second highest share of overnight stays by foreign tourists in the first quarter of 2025, according to monthly data on tourist accommodation published by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical agency.
On average across the EU, foreign visitors accounted for 45.6% of total overnight stays during the first three months of 2025, though the share varied significantly between countries. The highest shares were recorded in Malta (91.2%), Cyprus (85.7%), and Luxembourg (80.4%).
By contrast, foreign visitors made up only about one-fifth of overnight stays in Poland (18.6%), Romania (20.1%), and Germany (20.2%).
In the first quarter of 2025, there was a slight increase in overnight stays by foreign visitors in the EU, up 1.1% compared to the same period in 2024. Domestic overnight stays, however, showed a small decline of 1.3%.
The largest increases in foreign overnight stays were observed in Latvia (18.5%), Malta (17.2%), and Finland (10.6%), while the most significant decreases were recorded in Ireland (23.1%), Croatia (16.7%), and Sweden (11.5%).
A total of 452.4 million overnight stays were recorded in tourist accommodations across the EU in the first quarter of 2025, marking a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. January saw 139.0 million overnight stays, an increase of 3.5% compared to January 2024. February recorded 147.7 million, down 0.8%, while March reached 167.7 million, a decrease of 2.7%.
According to Eurostat, the slight decline in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 may be attributed to shifts in the calendar, with public holidays falling on different dates. These shifts affected the timing of school holidays around Carnival, moving some travel from February to March, and more significantly, moved Easter-related travel from March to April.
