As temperatures rise and the dry season approaches, Cyprus is preparing for battle—against wildfires. The Department of Forests has received 25 new fire engines, a significant boost to the country's firefighting capabilities, as the government vows to keep strengthening its fire response fleet.
Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment Maria Panayiotou called the fleet expansion a “day of pride” for Cyprus, emphasizing that the government remains committed to equipping the Forestry Department with the resources it needs.
“Our goal is to provide practical support—from manpower to advanced equipment—so the department can fulfill its crucial mission: protecting our forests,” Panayiotou said during the vehicle handover.
But the battle doesn’t stop on the ground. The minister confirmed that the government is also ramping up its aerial firefighting capacity, ensuring that when wildfires strike, Cyprus will have a full arsenal at the ready.
More Resources, Tougher Challenges
While Cyprus has made progress in fire prevention, officials acknowledge that suppression and rapid response remain critical. The country is facing another brutal summer, with hot, dry conditions increasing the risk of devastating blazes.
The Director of the Forestry Department, Savvas Ezekiel, expressed optimism, stating that the department is not only receiving the right tools but also has the skilled personnel to operate them effectively.
“In the coming days, we’re expecting six more firefighting platforms and six additional water tankers,” he said. “We are fully prepared to use every resource to protect our communities, forests, and the environment.”

The head of Star Automotive Hellas, Ioannis Kalligeris, summed up the mission with a striking comparison: "To have peace, you must be ready for war."
With climate change fueling more frequent and intense wildfires, firefighting has become a year-round battle. But with new equipment, expanded aerial support, and a dedicated firefighting force, Cyprus is gearing up to meet the challenge head-on.
As the island braces for another scorching summer, one thing is clear: when the fires come, Cyprus will be ready.
