Data released by Eurostat shows that in 2025, 17.1% of Cyprus’s population faced the risk of poverty or social exclusion. This corresponds to roughly 167,000 people. The percentage stayed the same as in 2024, though the total number of affected individuals rose slightly by about 3,000.
A breakdown by gender indicates that 75,000 men, or 15.5%, were in this category, compared with 93,000 women, representing 18.7%.
Across the European Union, 92.7 million people were classified as being in similar conditions in 2025, accounting for 20.9% of the population. This marks a small drop from 2024, when the figure stood at 93.3 million, or 21.0%. Among those affected across the EU, approximately 43.0 million were men and 49.7 million were women.
Eurostat defines this group as people living in households experiencing at least one of three conditions: income below the poverty threshold, severe deprivation in material or social terms, or very low levels of employment within the household.
