Cyprus is celebrating a record-breaking year for tourism, with 2024 marking the first time the island welcomed over four million visitors. A total of 4,040,200 tourists arrived last year, surpassing the previous record of 3,976,777 set in 2019. This represents a 5.1% increase compared to the 3.8 million arrivals in 2023, further solidifying tourism as the backbone of the Cypriot economy.

December 2024 also set a new all-time record for that month, with 133,063 arrivals—a 7.6% jump from the 123,630 visitors recorded in December 2023. The figures, released by the Statistical Service, highlight a resurgent and thriving tourism sector that continues to support jobs and businesses across the island.

The UK Leads, but Others Follow Strongly

British tourists remain Cyprus’s most loyal visitors, making up 23.7% of December’s arrivals (31,501 people). Visitors from Israel followed closely at 17.4% (23,168), with Poland (9.4%), Greece (9%), and Germany (5.7%) rounding out the top five. These figures show that Cyprus continues to attract a diverse range of travelers, a positive sign for the long-term stability of the industry.

Interestingly, while holidays remain the primary reason for visiting the island (49.6% in December), there’s been a notable increase in people visiting friends and relatives (37.5%) and those coming for business purposes (12.7%). This diversification in travel reasons further underscores Cyprus's broad appeal.

A Boost for Local Communities and Businesses

For the people of Cyprus, this tourism boom means more than just statistics. It’s a lifeline for countless local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to tour operators and souvenir shops. The influx of visitors pumps millions of euros into the economy, creating jobs and driving development.

Cypriots themselves also made the most of their holidays in 2024, with 168,022 residents traveling abroad in December—a 9.3% increase compared to 2023. Greece remained the top destination for Cypriot travelers, followed by the UK and Poland.

What’s Driving the Success?

Several factors contributed to this historic milestone. Cyprus's year-round sunshine, rich history, and world-class beaches have always been a draw, but the island’s increasing efforts to promote winter tourism seem to be paying off. Improved connectivity, targeted campaigns in key markets, and diversified offerings beyond the summer season have all played a role in this growth.

Moreover, Cyprus's reputation as a safe and welcoming destination has proven to be a key advantage in a competitive global market.

A Bright Future Ahead

Breaking the four-million mark isn’t just a feather in the cap for Cyprus—it’s a reminder of the island’s potential as a global tourism leader. As Cyprus continues to invest in infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and new experiences, the future of its tourism industry looks brighter than ever.

For Cypriots, this milestone is a moment to celebrate. Tourism isn’t just a business; it’s a shared experience that connects the island to the world and creates opportunities for generations to come.
