Cyprus Theatre Festival defends dialogue amid Fabre backlash

Festival stresses artistic freedom and open debate after criticism over Belgian artist's invitation.

Press Release

Cyprus International Theatre Festival (CITF) Announcement:

Open and Inclusive Dialogue

We want to make our stance clear: our festival unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, harassment, and abuse. At the same time, we strongly advocate for the importance of open dialogue—especially when dealing with difficult and controversial issues. The CITF does not seek to justify or overlook any reprehensible actions but rather to explore the complex relationship between artistic creation, individual responsibility, and the broader impact of "cancel culture."

The above, self-evident, position of ours is expressed in response to reactions concerning the presence of the internationally renowned artist Jan Fabre at this year’s Festival, as he had faced serious allegations in the past. These reactions emerged immediately after the announcement of our program, which, notably, included—not by chance—a discussion with the Belgian creator.

The reactions, which we regret to note had an impact on the Festival in terms of collaborations, created the mistaken perception that the Festival’s invitation to Fabre constitutes an endorsement of his actions, rather than an opportunity for critical dialogue.

While we fully understand the concerns and acknowledge that they are expressed with genuine motives, we believe that the artistic scene is not a court of law.

On the contrary, it is a space where, traditionally, such issues are approached and discussed with sincerity and critical thought.

Art, responsibility, and "cancel culture"—three concepts that ignite intense debate whenever they intersect. How should we engage with an artist whose work has profoundly influenced contemporary theatre and visual arts, yet whose personal actions have led to legal consequences?

Can we separate the art from the artist? This is a question without a simple answer, and in the case of Jan Fabre, it carries even greater significance.

About Jan Fabre

For over four decades, Jan Fabre has been a pivotal figure in contemporary performance and visual arts, internationally recognized for his bold and often provocative artistic approach. His work has been showcased in leading cultural institutions worldwide—from solo exhibitions at the Louvre to performances that redefine the boundaries of theatre. His artistic language, known for its raw and sometimes controversial nature, has been both celebrated and challenged.

In recent years, however, the public discussion surrounding Fabre has shifted from his artistic legacy to his personal conduct. In 2018, allegations of harassment, abuse of power, and inappropriate workplace behaviour emerged, leading to a court ruling in 2022. Fabre was found guilty of certain charges and received a suspended sentence. He has consistently denied the accusations, arguing that his working methods were misinterpreted.

This case has sparked a broader debate about the responsibility of the artistic world, whether and how artists with controversial pasts should continue to be presented, and the extent to which public opinion shapes cultural narratives.

It is also worth mentioning that there is no global consensus on Jan Fabre’s place in the arts. Since the conclusion of his legal case, he has been invited to solo exhibitions and performances in Venice, London, Rome, and Athens, where his presence has not provoked any reaction related to his judicial past.

The Performance – I AM A MISTAKE

Jan Fabre’s solo performance, I AM A MISTAKE, was written in 1988—long before recent controversies. The work explores themes such as artistic failure, self-doubt, and resistance to societal expectations—topics that resonate even more strongly today. While originally conceived as an introspective journey of self-awareness, the performance inevitably takes on new dimensions in light of Fabre’s personal history, making it a work of reflection rather than a statement of redemption.

About the Cyprus International Theatre Festival (CITF)

The Cyprus International Theatre Festival is a newly established institution created by artists with the goal of contributing to the cultural scene of Cyprus, with deep respect and appreciation for Cypriot creators. For this reason, as in previous editions, this year’s festival has also invited remarkable Cypriot productions to share the stage with international performances that enrich the country’s theatrical and cultural landscape.

In the coming days, Cyprus will host a major international theater festival, marking an unprecedented cultural moment for the island. Over the course of two months, in two cities, audiences will have the opportunity to experience six international performances, along with public talks, lectures, and masterclasses led by some of the most renowned figures in contemporary theater, dance, and performance. This is an extraordinary opportunity for both audiences and artists in Cyprus to connect with the global theatrical landscape.

During the festival’s two-month program, theater and dance productions will be presented alongside more than 25 events, featuring the participation of 100 artists from Cyprus, the USA, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Estonia, and Latvia. We are expecting 10,000 spectators and visitors to attend the festival’s events.

Lastly, we would like to highlight that we believe in open dialogue, artistic freedom, and the importance of engaging with challenging ideas rather than silencing them. This festival is not just about performances—it is about fostering discussion, reflection, and meaningful cultural exchange. We invite everyone to participate, to question, and to experience theater that provokes thought and conversation.
