Mobile desalination units donated by the United Arab Emirates and destined to serve Limassol are now expected to begin operating around July 22, roughly three weeks later than initially planned, officials said Tuesday.
During a site visit to the Moni power station, Deputy Director of the Water Development Department Giorgos Kazantzis said installation is ongoing but has been delayed due to daily technical challenges and issues uncovered during testing.
“The project is complex. The units are brand new, and we’re encountering problems that need real-time solutions,” Kazantzis told reporters, noting close coordination with the manufacturer in the UAE and local contractors.
To offset any potential water shortfall, authorities are activating additional boreholes in the Kouris Delta and Germasogeia.
Kazantzis emphasized that despite the delay, the project remains on track for a “highly satisfactory result,” citing strong cooperation among stakeholders, including the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
Crews are working seven days a week, he said, and while the revised timeline is subject to material delivery and other variables, all efforts are being made to expedite water supply. Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou, who visited the site, did not issue a public statement.
