In a bid to enhance road safety, Cyprus has implemented rigorous penalties for specified traffic violations, shedding light on an often-overlooked offense – 'Driving While Tired.' Effective since October 1, 2020, the amended laws passed by the House of Representatives aim to curb behaviors contributing to fatal and serious road accidents, with a particular focus on fatigue-induced driving.
While the public may not be fully aware of this less-recognized traffic violation, the legislation now deems 'Driving While Tired' punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a fine of €3,000. The Cyprus Police stress that Traffic Police officers possess the authority to identify instances of fatigue on the road, considering observable behaviors such as reckless driving and visible signs of exhaustion in the driver's eyes or face.
This new measure underscores the commitment to road safety and encourages public awareness regarding the dangers of driving while fatigued. Motorists are urged to stay informed about the updated regulations to contribute to a safer and more responsible road environment.
