Four members of a local family drowned Friday off the coast in the Karpas peninsula, while the youngest son was rescued and hospitalized.

According to Turkish Cypriot media, a local family of five had gone to the beach in the north on Friday evening, in the Karpas area, where they found themselves in choppy waters around 6:30pm.

Reports said the father and mother aged 48 and 40, along with two of their children, an 18-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son, all drowned during a wild water turbulence.

The youngest son of the family, aged 12, was rescued by a local male who nearly drowned himself according to reports.

The boy was rushed to the Emergency Room at a public hospital in Famagusta while his rescuer, aged 32, was also hospitalized and reportedly transferred to a hospital in Nicosia.
