A drunk driver was arrested Saturday morning after traffic police spotted him driving the wrong way on the Nicosia-Limassol highway.

According to police, traffic officers spotted a vehicle on the Nicosia-Limassol highway going the wrong way, heading north towards Nicosia while driving in the southbound lanes towards Limassol, on Friday night shortly after midnight.

Parts of the incident were captured on video, showing a police cruiser chasing the vehicle in a dangerous pursuit while avoiding oncoming vehicles, including a semi-trailer truck. The brief video ends after the police got in front of the suspect car.

The vehicle, driven by a 62-year-old Greek Cypriot male, was spotted near the Mosfiloti exit and was cut off near Alambra a few miles further down, while police said the suspect was arrested on the spot.

The man was tested for alcohol with results showing 120mg, which is over five times the limit set at 22mg for adults.

Police pressed charges and then released the suspect, who was picked up by a family relative, according to an official report.

The Pera Chorio police station in Nicosia district is handling the case.
