France crash prompts warning for Citroen owners in Cyprus over Takata airbags

Authorities say seven vehicles in Cyprus may soon face immobilization order.

Newsroom

The Department of Road Transport in Cyprus is urging owners of certain Citroen vehicles to avoid using them due to a potential safety risk involving defective Takata airbags, following a recent accident in France.

Officials said the department has contacted owners of seven Citroen C3 and DS3 models manufactured between 2008 and 2019. Although these vehicles have already been recalled for airbag replacement, the repairs have not yet been carried out.

The department said the affected vehicles fall into a category that the manufacturer may soon require to be taken off the road, depending on developments related to the incident in France, where a similar vehicle with a faulty airbag was reportedly involved in a serious accident.

While the manufacturer has not yet classified these cars as needing immobilization, authorities in Cyprus are taking precautionary steps. The department is advising owners to immediately schedule an appointment with the local distributor for the airbag replacement.

According to the department, repeated notifications have already been issued to owners, and the local distributor is working to secure the necessary replacement parts.

In the meantime, drivers are strongly advised not to use the affected vehicles.

The department also said it has contacted staff at Cyprus’s Permanent Representation to the European Union to gather more information from French authorities regarding the incident and any resulting safety measures.

Officials say they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure public safety.
