Friday forecast: Wet, windy, and white on the peaks

A new disturbance from the west is checking in today, bringing locally intense storms and mountain snow.

Newsroom

The weekend has arrived with an unstable agenda as a new disturbance from the west takes over. While the morning might start with just a few clouds in the west and north, don’t be fooled. The weather is planning to be mostly cloudy by midday, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms becoming the main event. In some areas, particularly along the western and southern coasts, the rain could be intense and prolonged, so it’s a good day to keep your indoor plans as a backup.

Temperatures are feeling the shift, reaching 19°C inland, around 20°C on the southeastern and eastern coasts, and a cooler 17°C elsewhere. Up in the higher mountains, it’s a brisk 8°C, where any precipitation is expected to fall as snow or sleet. The wind is also making its presence known, blowing mainly southwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort, but ramping up to a "very strong" 6 Beaufort along windward coasts. The sea is responding in kind, with conditions expected to be rough.

Tonight, the southern half of the island remains in the crosshairs for more showers and thunderstorms. If you’re near a storm, keep an eye out for hail, and if you’re in the mountains, expect that snow to continue. Winds will stay punchy, potentially making the sea very rough on windward coasts by dawn.

The trend continues through the next few days:

Saturday: Expect more of the same with local showers and thunderstorms. The phenomena could be particularly intense or prolonged in the west and south. Temperatures will also take a slight dip, falling just below our usual seasonal averages.

Sunday & Monday: The unstable pattern lingers with intermittent showers and the occasional thunderstorm. Troodos remains in the snow or sleet zone through the start of the week.

The reality check: We’ve moved into a cooler-than-average stretch, so you might want to keep the heavier coats accessible until at least Tuesday. It’s a classic wet-weather weekend. Between the thin dust in the air and the incoming rain, your car is likely to end the day with a fresh coat of sky mud.
