Starting September 1, students across Cyprus will be able to get personalized “Motion” bus cards that drastically cut the cost of public transport, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works announced.

Under the new system, students will pay just €5 per month, with the government covering an additional €17, while the annual fee will be €30 with a €190 state subsidy, according to a ministerial decision issued on August 27.

To get a card, students will need to present a certificate of attendance or a student ID for the current school year. Large families and families of five sending children to public secondary and technical schools are fully exempt from paying the fee, provided they present the appropriate family ID or certificate.

Children under the care of the Social Welfare Services (PSS), including those not attending school, will also benefit. The monthly and annual fees for these students will be paid by the PSS, while the Ministry will provide the corresponding subsidies. Meanwhile, needy students and children of Guaranteed Minimum Income (IEEE) beneficiaries will receive tickets of zero value.

To make the transition smooth, all students will be allowed free travel during the first week of school, until September 12, giving families time to secure the personalized cards. Starting September 13, students must have a valid “Motion” card to ride the buses, with no extensions allowed.

The ministry said the program aims to make public transport more accessible, encourage students to use it, and ensure that fare subsidies reach those who need them most.

Families and students are encouraged to contact local bus operators for guidance on obtaining their “Motion” cards.
