Local residents of Bacoli, near Naples, were left stunned and disheartened when it was announced that the historic Punta Pennata island is being auctioned off by Sotheby’s. The community had been pushing to transform the island into a public park, unaware that it was privately owned by a local resident of Naples.

Described by Sotheby’s as a “historic and natural gem,” the island is nestled in the crystal-clear waters of Bacoli and features a 2,152-square-foot unfinished villa, complete with seven rooms and a wine cellar. With its pristine views of the surrounding landscape, including the nearby Schiacchetiello, the island is being marketed as a rare and exclusive investment opportunity.

Punta Pennata’s rich history stretches back to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which covered Pompeii in ash. Ships launched from what is now the island’s shores to rescue survivors of the eruption. Originally a peninsula, Punta Pennata was separated from the mainland by a powerful storm surge in 1966, transforming it into the island it is today.

The island is also surrounded by the ancient resort of Baiae, now submerged beneath the sea, and boasts underwater Roman fishponds and the remains of an ancient military port, highlighting its historical significance.

For Bacoli residents, however, Punta Pennata is not just a beautiful property—it's a vital piece of their heritage. Josi Della Ragione, the mayor of Bacoli, has been leading efforts to preserve the island as public land. In an impassioned statement on Facebook, Della Ragione declared, “Let’s take it back! It is our paradise on earth.” He has stressed the island’s importance to local history and scenery and vowed to protect it as a peaceful, untouched retreat.

Although Sotheby’s has not disclosed the exact price, Punta Pennata is estimated to be worth around €5 million. Della Ragione has already reached out to Sotheby’s to express his intention to purchase the island, and regional and national authorities have shown interest in providing funds to help make this possible.

Despite the auction being framed as an exclusive investment opportunity, Della Ragione made it clear that the island’s numerous restrictions on development would prevent it from being used for commercial gain. Instead, he emphasized the importance of preserving the island as public land for future generations.

As the auction date approaches, Bacoli residents remain hopeful that they can secure the island’s future as a public park, ensuring its natural beauty and historical legacy will be protected for years to come.
