In a landmark development for Cyprus, the European Commission has approved the expansion of the Pedieos (Kanlidere) Linear Park to span the entire city of Nicosia, including the buffer zone and the occupied north. This ambitious project aims to connect both sides of the divided capital through a network of wooden bridges, cycling paths, and green corridors, fostering sustainable mobility and cross-community access.
Set for completion by 2026 and included in the 2025 EU budget, the park will allow users to travel along the full stretch of the Pedieos River. Cyclists and pedestrians will traverse designated routes, pass through the Ledra Palace checkpoint for necessary procedures, and continue their journey seamlessly across the divide.
This long-anticipated initiative marks a significant step forward in bicommunal cooperation. A formal announcement and project presentation are expected in mid-May, to be delivered jointly by Nicosia’s Mayor Charalambos Prountzos and Turkish Cypriot "mayor" Mehmet Harmanci.
