Israel has placed high importance on the electrical interconnection project that will link its electricity grid with Cyprus and Greece, calling it a "top priority," Israeli Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen announced.
In a post on the social media platform X, Cohen shared details of a recent phone conversation with his Cypriot counterpart, Energy, Trade and Industry Minister George Papanastasiou. "We underlined the strong relationship and ongoing cooperation between Israel and Cyprus," Cohen wrote, emphasizing the strategic significance of the "Great Sea Interconnector" project for Israel.
The "Great Sea Interconnector" is a planned electricity cable that will connect Israel's power grid to the European Union via Cyprus and Greece. Cohen highlighted that the project would enhance energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean region by providing access to diversified energy markets and integrating Israel more closely into the European energy grid.
"This pioneering project is a top priority for Israel, as it enhances regional security, provides access to diversified energy markets, and strengthens Israel's integration into the European energy grid," Cohen added.
The project marks a significant step in fostering regional energy cooperation and could serve as a major development in the efforts to secure a stable and sustainable energy supply across the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe.
