The Larnaca district is on high alert following the detection of foot-and-mouth disease cases in several areas, beginning with Oroklini and Livadia. Authorities have activated crisis management protocols and are closely monitoring developments, as the risk of further spread remains real. At the Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Center, dedicated management teams have been set up under the leadership of Justice and Public Order Minister Kostas Phytiris.
Police Investigation Underway to Identify “Patient Zero”
Since Saturday, the police have been conducting an intensive investigation aimed not only at pinpointing the origin of the outbreak but also at clarifying the circumstances that led to the chain of dangerous events.
According to police sources, investigators are collecting statements and evaluating information related, among other things, to animal feed and possible delays in notifying the relevant authorities. Reports suggest the first case may have been identified days before the official announcement.
A patrol plan has also been put into action to systematically check whether measures issued by veterinary services are being followed as part of the efforts to contain the disease. Authorities are increasing their presence in the field, with patrols covering livestock farms to ensure full compliance with established protocols.
Statements From Affected Farmers and Others
Since Saturday, a large number of statements have already been collected, including from citizens who came forward voluntarily to share what they know and provide their account of events. Many of these individuals have suffered significant losses. Authorities expect the number of statements to rise further as more farms in the district report cases, reflecting the official start of the investigation.
Animal Feed and Delays Under Scrutiny
At this stage, the police have not identified any specific individual against whom formal charges are being considered, as the investigation remains in its early stages. However, authorities are examining claims and information arising from the collected statements, which continue to grow.
Those who have given statements include farmers, veterinarians, and officials from the relevant veterinary services. The investigation is focusing on the possibility that infected animal feed may have been transported from the occupied areas, and it is believed the virus may have been active in Larnaca’s livestock units for more than ten days before being officially reported.
Possible Investigation Into Official Negligence
Authorities note that if further evidence emerges, the investigation could expand to include potential negligence by responsible agencies. Officials stress that the inquiry is still in its very early stages, with a large number of statements already recorded and more expected in the coming days.
