Environment FEO Cyprus (OPOK) is sounding the alarm over the escalating issue of coastal erosion along the shoreline from Kiti to Agios Theodoros. The ongoing retreat of the coastline poses significant threats to both natural ecosystems and human infrastructure, demanding immediate and effective action.
Coastal erosion results from a combination of natural forces and human activities. Factors such as wave action, rising sea levels, and the area's geological composition are further intensified by human interventions, including port construction, sand extraction, and unregulated tourism development. The effects of erosion are far-reaching, leading to beach shrinkage, damage to coastal infrastructure, degradation of marine habitats, and profound alterations to the landscape.
To mitigate this pressing issue, OPOK calls for the adoption of sustainable and science-backed measures. Restoration of natural coastal defenses through the reinforcement of sand dunes and coastal vegetation is essential. The implementation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management is necessary to ensure a balanced approach between environmental conservation and socio-economic activities. Stricter regulations on coastal developments must be enforced to prevent further deterioration of vulnerable areas. Ongoing scientific monitoring using advanced remote sensing and mathematical modeling is crucial to track and manage erosion trends.
OPOK urges government agencies and stakeholders to prioritize coastal protection through informed and sustainable strategies. Immediate action is crucial to safeguarding the region’s environmental and economic future.
