A man who savagely attacked his mother last year was sentenced to eight years on Thursday, after he was convicted on manslaughter half a year after the incident.

The case dates back to early 2018, when a 43-year-old man attacked his 73-year-old mother, following an argument over money. According to police, the man’s uncle heard screams in the evening of January 22 in their Ypsonas home in Limassol, coming from his sister’s bedroom.

The woman’s son reportedly had called for an ambulance twice, without giving his name or details except simply asking the dispatcher to “send an ambulance.” She was rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital around 1am and later transferred to Nicosia General’s Intensive Care Unit, with bruises all over her body and brain hemorrhage.

State forensic pathologist Eleni Antoniou had declared the victim clinically dead later in the morning and the victim was kept hooked up to a life support machine at a private clinic until her death later in the summer.

The son, who is said to be facing a number of mental issues, showed remorse according to local media while his defence attorney told the judge her client was seeking help to battle alcohol and drug addiction.

During the hearing prior to sentencing, the lawyer also said her client was a victim of physical abuse when he was a young boy. She added that he also saw his own father abusing his mother, arguing that his experiences traumatized him since early childhood.
