Cyber dater says he was robbed at gun point after he went to visit a woman he met online

Four suspects have been detained on theft-related charges, following a complaint by a man who says he was ambushed after he set up a meeting with the woman he met online.

Local media said a 27-year-old male resident from Nicosia met a female online, aged 38, and the two arranged to meet at the woman’s apartment on Sunday night, around 9pm.

According to a complaint he filed with police, he went to the woman’s apartment in the capital where two other males barged in and threatened him with a handgun. The accuser says he was robbed at gun point, with the suspects grabbing his mobile phone, two golden rings, and €2000 in cash.

Police told Knews they would not comment on the backgrounds of the suspects or the complainant but confirmed the woman who set up the meeting was among those detained, along with two 28-year-old male suspects and another man aged 24.

CID Nicosia are investigating the case.

Online dating experts say cyber daters should initially meet someone first in a public space, preferably not alone, adding that nobody should feel the pressure to go anywhere else with their date before getting a better sense of that person.
