Suspect arrested in old Nicosia knife attack, victim remains in critical condition

A man who was arrested in Tuesday’s stabbing in old Nicosia has admitted to police that he attacked his friend with a knife.

The two men got involved in a physical altercation with the suspect pulling out a knife and attacking his friend

Police say a man in custody, described as a 47-year-old Georgian national, was having an argument with another male, aged 33 also from Georgia, in downtown Nicosia in the area known as the OXI roundabout, Tuesday afternoon.

At one point, the two men, described in the media as friends, got involved in a physical altercation with the suspect pulling out a knife and attacking the other man.

The 47-year-old fled the scene in broad daylight while the 33-year-old was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital, with a knife wound in the abdomen.

Police, who were informed by an unknown person about the incident around 5pm, began to investigate, managing to locate and arrest the 47-year-old man.

The suspect is facing possible attempted murder charges. He admitted to stabbing his friend, who was said to be in critical condition.
