Authorities in Cyprus have arrested two minors, aged 17 and 14, following reports of theft and assault against a police officer, the police said on Monday.
The arrests came after a resident of Nicosia contacted police to report the theft of her handbag, car keys, and mobile phone worth approximately 500 euros from a beach bench in the Larnaca district yesterday morning.
Members of the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department responded to the complaint and apprehended two individuals who were observed behaving suspiciously in the area. During a search, police discovered a nylon bag containing six mobile phones among other items in their possession. The suspects failed to provide satisfactory explanations for the phones.
Upon being informed of their impending arrest, the suspects resisted, pushing police officers and attempting to escape. Authorities managed to apprehend the 17-year-old suspect at the scene, while the 14-year-old was located and arrested shortly afterward.
Later in the afternoon, two additional victims reported the theft of three mobile phones from their unlocked vehicles in the same vicinity. The stolen phones were positively identified among those recovered from the suspects.
The investigation, led by the Oroklini Police Station, remains ongoing.
Authorities urge anyone with further information regarding these incidents to come forward.
