Nicosia crossing set for major upgrade thanks to the EU

EU-backed project to reduce wait times and improve safety at one of the city’s busiest border points.

The European Union is funding an expansion of the Agios Dometios Crossing Point, one of the busiest border crossings in Nicosia, aiming to make travel smoother and safer for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Implemented by the United Nations Development Programme through the Local Infrastructure Facility, the project comes as traffic volumes at the crossing have steadily grown in recent years. Officials say the expansion will help reduce congestion, shorten waiting times, and improve overall accessibility.

Two contracts worth nearly €435,000 have been signed to cover excavation, paving, electrical and mechanical installations, landscaping, and other works within the UN buffer zone. Construction began on December 4 and is expected to be completed by the end of January 2026. Authorities said all measures will be taken to minimize disruption during the work.

EU officials say the project is part of the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, which supports economic development, encourages integration across the island, and fosters contacts between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

Once finished, the upgraded crossing is expected to strengthen people-to-people ties across Cyprus while improving mobility and safety for daily commuters.

“Investments like this not only improve infrastructure but also contribute to greater cooperation and mutual understanding on the island,” a UNDP spokesperson said.
