No green light for jet skis yet as Ayia Napa puts Konnos water sports on hold

Citing serious safety and health concerns, the Municipality freezes licensing at Konnos Bay while a legal battle brews and a full risk review gets underway.

Water sports at one of Cyprus’ most popular beaches are on hold, for now. The Ayia Napa Municipality has hit pause on the licensing process for activities in the Konnos Bay area, raising red flags over safety and health concerns.

In a statement this week, the municipality explained it’s holding off on awarding any licenses for water sports at Konnos (coastal point S21), following a deeper look into possible risks. Officials say the decision, made on May 28, was taken in cooperation with government departments responsible for public safety and the environment.

Only one company had applied for the license, and it’s already been notified about the suspension. But that’s not the end of the story—on June 6, the company filed a legal appeal against the municipality’s move. That case is still making its way through the courts.

Ayia Napa authorities insist this isn’t a permanent ban. They say the pause is necessary to thoroughly investigate safety concerns and make sure any future decisions protect beachgoers, the environment, and the public interest.

“Safety comes first,” the municipality said, adding that their goal is sustainable coastal development—not pleasing private business interests.

Until further notice, Konnos Bay will remain without licensed water sports, as local officials weigh the risks and decide the next steps.
