Lady’s Mile beach remains free of pollution, according to the Director of the Environment Department, Theodoulos Mesimeris, who addressed recent concerns Sunday following a warning from the British Bases in Akrotiri.
Responding to reports of potential contamination, Mesimeris confirmed that water samples taken Friday were analyzed by the State Laboratory and showed no signs of degradation.
“There is no incident of pollution at Lady’s Mile,” he said, adding that the results were formally shared with the British Bases. “Both sides are cooperating to repeat the process to reassure the public.”
The Environment Department operates a routine water monitoring program at 123 locations across Cyprus, including three sampling points at Lady’s Mile. These are assessed under a standardized EU framework by an accredited body.
Mesimeris emphasized that the alert from the British Bases stemmed from internal reports that prompted further investigation. The 48-hour analytical process yielded clean results, and additional sampling is scheduled for May 20 as part of ongoing assessments.
Regular checks continue year-round, with increased frequency during the tourist season. “Cyprus’s waters are among the best in the EU,” Mesimeris said, reaffirming the country’s commitment to water quality.
