Paphos-Polis road contractor proposals await approval

Plans for Paphos airport road improvement under review

Plans to improve the road linking Paphos Airport with the city and a potential alternative route are under consideration, according to Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) President George Mais.

Mais told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the PCCI held a meeting with environmental experts, where opinions were exchanged about the Paphos Airport road. Discussions also covered the alternative route and challenges, including practical and legal issues.

The Department of Environment has committed to visiting Paphos soon to assess the impact of potential road improvements and revisit its position, Mais said.

Regarding the Paphos-Polis road, Mais said Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades recently informed them that the contractor submitted proposals concerning the suitability of materials. These proposals, while theoretically acceptable, require further evidence of successful use elsewhere, as requested by the Public Works Department.

The contractor is expected to provide this information shortly, Mais added.

On the Paphos Marina project in Potima, Mais noted that consultants hired by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism had completed their preliminary work by September 12. Consultations with stakeholders are expected to begin within two weeks.

Mais said he spoke with the Deputy Minister of Tourism, who indicated that upon his return to Cyprus next week, they will further discuss investor attraction terms that had previously been unfavorable. Mais estimated that the new terms might not be ready before early 2025, with the tender expected by July of that year.

Mais also mentioned that the contract for the study of the road connecting Tombs of the Kings to Peyia has been awarded. However, he expressed concern about the 32-month timeline for its completion, attributed to the involvement of multiple government departments.

The PCCI has proposed a coordination effort to allow simultaneous studies, which has been accepted by both the study team and the Ministry of Transport to shorten the process.
