Paralimni-Deryneia officials shut down abandoned apartment complex

Missing doors, no water, and years of neglect—authorities intervene, but ownership of the derelict property remains a mystery.

In a bold move to improve living conditions and protect its reputation, the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia has shut down a derelict apartment complex that had become a danger to health and safety. The building, described as a "war zone," had been neglected for years in a residential neighborhood near the tourist area.

The apartments were in shocking condition—doors and windows were missing, there was no electricity or running water, and basic sanitary facilities were completely unusable. The building became a magnet for uncontrolled entry and pollution, putting both occupants and passersby at risk. Notably, the municipality did not mention who owned the property.

“This kind of situation is unacceptable in a modern city that relies heavily on tourism,” said Mayor George Nicolettos. He stressed that the municipality's actions were meant to permanently resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The operation to clear the area went smoothly, thanks to coordination between the Police, the Welfare Office, and municipal teams. People staying in the apartments, including families, were relocated safely before work began to clean and secure the site.

"The municipality has taken steps to fence off the property and prohibit any further use of it," said Nicolettos. "We will not tolerate conditions like this in any part of our city, whether it’s a residential or tourist area."

He added that the images of the run-down building were a stain on the municipality’s reputation, but vowed that the Municipal Council would continue working hard to improve life for both residents and visitors.

By tackling this long-standing issue, Paralimni - Deryneia is sending a clear message: the city will not allow neglect to undermine its status as a safe, welcoming place to live and visit.
