Police in Larnaca are investigating the alleged kidnapping of a 22-year-old foreign man after his family received a phone call and messages demanding money for his release, authorities said on Friday.
According to police, the case came to light shortly before 1 a.m. after the man’s roommate filed a complaint reporting him missing.
Investigators say the young man, a resident of Larnaca and a foreign student, left his home around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday to go to his first day of work at a factory in an undisclosed location. He has not been seen since.
Later in the night, his father, who lives abroad, reportedly received a call from an unknown person, along with messages asking for money in exchange for the man’s release, police said.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the disappearance is being treated as a confirmed kidnapping or a possible abduction case under active investigation, but they are examining all available leads.
The Larnaca Police Department is leading the investigation.
Police have not released further details about the victim, the suspected location of the alleged abduction, or the amount of money reportedly demanded.
The case has raised concern locally, particularly among the foreign student community in Cyprus, where thousands of young people live and work while studying.
Investigations are continuing.
