Police issued a missing person alert on Wednesday for Grzegorz Pawelczyk, a 44-year-old Polish national who was said to have gone in the water at a beach in Limassol’s Molos area Tuesday night around 10pm.

Pawelczyk was said to have consumed alcohol before taking off his clothes and going in the water, according to his drinking buddy, a 38-year-old man also from Poland

Local reports said Pawelczyk had gone to Molos with a friend to drink beer on the beach, when he later put on his flippers and went in the water but never returned to shore.

A police report described Pawelczyk as a bald man of slim build, about 5.5 feet tall.

Pawelczyk was said to have consumed alcohol before taking off his clothes and going in the water, according to his drinking buddy, a 38-year-old man also from Poland, who said his friend started moving further away from the shore until one moment he was out of sight.

Police told Knews Thursday morning there was no update on the search for the Polish man but confirmed the search operation is not restricted in the Molos area. Officials previously also said the search area could be larger due to the possibility of strong currents.

A search at Pawelczyk’s residence did not yield any new information according to media reports.

Coast Guard officials remain on the lookout while police officers and lifeguards were also assisting in the search. Divers and civil defence volunteers were also reportedly pitching in.
