Portugal breaks records with 149 hours of uninterrupted renewable energy

Portugal's 6-day surge in renewable energy defies expectations

In a remarkable feat, Portugal achieved a new milestone by generating more renewable energy than its electricity demands for an unprecedented 149 consecutive hours.

From October 31 to November 6, the country produced 1102 GWh of electricity, surpassing its consumption of 840 GWh during the same period.

This six-day streak not only set a record but also exceeded household and industrial energy needs by an impressive 262 GWh.

Breaking its 2019 record of 131 hours, Portugal's recent achievement showcased the nation's commitment to sustainability.

Notably, for 131 hours, renewable energy surpassed the requirements of the entire National Electric System without resorting to conventional thermal power sources.

Additionally, between November 1 and 5, Portugal exported electricity to Spain for 95 consecutive hours, demonstrating its prowess in the renewable energy sector.

Grid operator REN emphasized the significance of these records, highlighting Portugal's progressive integration of native renewable sources.

The country aims to generate 85% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, with plans to decommission all natural gas-fired power stations by 2040 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, five years ahead of the initial commitment.

October saw renewables contributing 67% of Portugal's power needs, driven by favorable conditions for hydropower and wind power.

Wind energy, in particular, achieved a historic high, breaking daily production records. Year-to-date statistics reveal that renewables have satisfied 56% of the country's energy requirements, with wind accounting for 24%, hydropower 18%, solar power 8%, and biomass 6%.

Notably, natural gas accounted for 21% of Portugal's energy, while the remaining 23% was imported from other countries. Portugal's ongoing success in renewable energy marks a significant step toward a sustainable and green future.
