Social media 'like' sparks physical assault

Paphos altercation leaves man with spinal fracture

Newsroom

What began as a routine social media gesture spiraled into chaos in the serene streets of Kissonerga, Paphos Province, on Wednesday night, culminating in a brutal assault that left one man nursing serious injuries.

Sources reveal that a seemingly innocuous "like" on a social media post by a 45-year-old individual triggered an unexpected and aggressive reaction from a group of four. The disagreement quickly spilled into the real world, escalating into a physical altercation outside the 45-year-old's workplace.

Swift police intervention led to the apprehension of a 24-year-old Greek Cypriot linked to the assault. However, the situation took an unexpected turn as the victim, in a surprising twist, retaliated against the suspect during the arrest, resulting in both individuals being placed in custody.

The aftermath of the confrontation saw the injured man rushed to Paphos General Hospital, where medical assessments uncovered a spinal fracture and multiple other injuries, underscoring the severity of the altercation.

As authorities race to track down the remaining individuals involved, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatility that can arise from online interactions and the imperative of maintaining civility in both virtual and real-world encounters.
