Parliamentary leaders from small European states concluded the 18th Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of Small States of Europe in Nicosia this week, focusing the importance of regional cooperation.
Hosted by the Cypriot House of Representatives, the event brought together speakers from Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Monaco, and Malta, along with representatives from San Marino. House President Annita Demetriou opened the conference, which ran from September 15–16, and featured discussions on participatory democracy, the impact of artificial intelligence on governance, and strategies for small states to navigate turbulent international conditions.
President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides welcomed participants at the Presidential Palace, stressing the greater responsibility of smaller nations to coordinate their actions and amplify their voices on the global stage. The president noted the relevance of the gathering ahead of the upcoming visit by European Council President Antonio Costa.
Keynote addresses were delivered by Cypriot officials, including Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou, alongside domestic and international experts. The conference concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration by the participating parliamentary leaders, followed by a press briefing.
