Sweltering heat wave hits Cyprus

Orange warning as interior and mountains get heat wave, coast gets morning onshore breeze

Newsroom

Weather officials have issued an orange warning for Cyprus due to extreme high temperatures both inland and in the mountains, with a slight drop expected gradually in the coming days only in some areas.

A seasonal low pressure and a relatively warm air front have once again entered the weather system around Cyprus, with officials issuing an orange alert for Sunday afternoon from 1pm until 5pm.

The orange warning was issued due to temperature highs expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius in parts of the interior as well as 34 mountain peaks. Levels will also reach 34 the south, southwest, and out west, while it will be 36 in all other coastal regions.

Sunday skies will be mostly clear with local winds flowing from sea to land during the early part of the day, while weak to moderate winds are expected for the rest of the day.

Evening weather will be mostly clear with weak to moderate winds, while increasing cloud formations are expected on and off in high altitudes and possibly inland.

Fair skies are expected Monday with no significant change in temperature, while cloudy afternoon skies will be on and off Tuesday and Wednesday, mainly in the mountains but also possibly inland.

A slight drop in temperature will take place after Monday but won’t be very noticeable in areas of the interior or in the mountains, where levels will remain above normal averages for this time of the year.
